Virtual Physiotherapy Spotlight: Dylan Baggott

Kirsten RoesinkPhysiotherapy, Spotlight, Virtual Care

Are you looking to continue your rehabilitative treatment while practicing social distancing and self-isolating?

Good news! pt Health now offers virtual physiotherapy, giving you the opportunity to receive treatment from the comfort of your own home through video conference technology.

Wondering how virtual physiotherapy works? In this Spotlight, we’ll share some first hand information from one of our physiotherapists with you.

Dylan Baggott, Physiotherapist and Clinic Team Manager at Austin Ave Physiotherapy – pt Health, has been offering virtual physiotherapy for the past few weeks.

Today, we’re talking to Dylan about his experience with this new service so far.

Q: Tell us about the type of treatments you can provide through virtual physiotherapy.

A: Outside of hands-on care, which when needed can’t be replaced, there are many types of treatment clinicians already provide under regular circumstances, which can now be delivered through virtual care.

Some of my personal experiences include:

  • Reviewing progress of home exercise. Through virtual care you can easily review the patient performing their exercises and track their progress. I’ve also been providing patients with tips and tricks how they can best do their exercises in their home environment.
  • Education. Virtual care gives me the opportunity to provide patients with advice, encouragement and education about their condition.
  • Self mobilization. I’ve been able to teach several patients how to apply joint mobilization and soft tissue mobilization to themselves.
  • Answer questions. I’ve noticed that some of my patients have a lot of questions, especially now that they can’t receive in-person care. Through virtual care I’m able to help answer their questions, which seems to really help them deal with any stress and anxiety they might be experiencing.

Q: What has the patient experience been like with virtual physiotherapy?

A: So far the patient experience has been really good. I have to admit, there has been some doubt as to the value of virtual care, but overall the patient experience has been good.

Patients who have chosen to participate in virtual care definitely seem to leave the virtual session feeling empowered. They’re equipped with exercises and advice on what they can do to manage and improve their condition or injury during this time of physical distancing.

Q: Can you share your favourite story of how you helped a patient with virtual physiotherapy?

A: I don’t have one specific favourite story (yet). But I will say that every patient that I’ve treated through virtual care so far has left with tools they didn’t have before and with an understanding of their condition/injury that they can use to take the steps towards recovery.

As for myself, virtual care has definitely been an eye opener. Virtual care is a tool that will be a bigger part of physiotherapy once the COVID-19 crisis is over.
