Are you looking to continue your rehabilitative treatment while practicing physical distancing and self-isolating?
Good news! pt Health now offers virtual physiotherapy, giving you the opportunity to receive treatment from the comfort of your own home through video conference technology.
Wondering how virtual physiotherapy works? In this Spotlight, we’ll share some first hand information from one of our physiotherapists with you.
D’Arcy Heenan, Physiotherapist at Drury Lane Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation – pt Health has been offering virtual physiotherapy here for the past few weeks.
Today, we’re talking to D’Arcy about his experience with this service so far.
Q: Tell us about the type of treatments you can provide through virtual physiotherapy.
A: We are able to see everyone we would typically see in the clinic. We are able to assess and treat patients from the comfort and safety of their own home.
I am able educate patients about their injury or condition, prescribe exercises, and progress exercises when necessary. I’m also there to help guide and motivate patients through this unprecedented time.
Q: What has the patient experience been like with virtual care?
A: So far patient experiences have been positive. My patients are happy to have an option to continue their treatment and continue to progress towards their rehabilitation goals.
It is a bit of a change for some patients that may have had more hands on treatment, but the core of physiotherapy can still be delivered (education, exercise, and motivating patients towards reaching their personal goals).
Q: Can you share your favourite story of how you helped a patient with virtual care?
A: I have assessed a few patients who recently have had surgery.
Typical post operative treatments involve some passive treatments to increase mobility. With virtual treatments this is not possible, but working with patients we problem solved and came up with strategies to overcome this.
An example of this is having a family member perform ankle passive range of motion on a patient who is early post op.
