Are you looking to continue your rehabilitative treatment while practicing physical distancing and self-isolating?
Good news! pt Health now offers virtual physiotherapy, giving you the opportunity to receive treatment from the comfort of your own home through video conference technology.
Wondering how virtual physiotherapy works? In this Spotlight, we’ll share some first hand information from one of our physiotherapists with you.
Don Lesar, Clinic Team Manager and Physiotherapist at Fairview Physiotherapy – pt Health has been offering virtual physiotherapy here for the past few weeks.
Today, we’re talking to Don about his experience with this service so far.
Q: Tell us about the type of treatments you can provide through virtual physiotherapy.
A: Through virtual care, as physiotherapists, we can provide what I personally feel are the most valuable components of most physiotherapy care plans – education, advice, and individualized exercise.
I believe that virtual care is going to improve the calibre of care provided by all physiotherapists who delve into this new mode of delivering care. What I mean by that is that it forces clinicians to listen, to communicate, to connect. Strong communication is the foundation on which our treatment plans rest.
Further, it forces clinicians to place emphasis on the aspect of the care plan that patients are able to fulfill at home (advice and exercise).
A: Overall the patient experience has been fairly seamless.
We have had some minor tech glitches that we’ve always been able to trouble shoot, however, I do think having to move their camera around a bit keeps patients engaged in the sessions.
Most patients have been pleasantly surprised how easy the technology side of virtual care has been and have been exceedingly happy with how much can be accomplished clinically through virtual care.
Q: Can you share your favourite story of how you helped a patient with virtual care?
A: So far my favourite story has been that of a patient who had surgery shortly before COVID lockdown really took hold.
This put the initiation of her treatment on hold as she didn’t at the time have an assessment booked anywhere and no-one had informed her of the availability of virtual care.
A friend of hers who had previously been treated at Fairview informed her that we were doing VPT so she booked. She was on crutches and nervous to load her knee as she hadn’t had much guidance since surgery.
By the end of the session she was moving more confidently and is well on her way to crutchless walking.
A real solid example of the importance of the education, advice, guidance and support that we can provide virtually to new and existing patients.
