Are you looking to continue your rehabilitative treatment while practicing physical distancing and self-isolating?
Good news! pt Health now offers virtual physiotherapy, giving you the opportunity to receive treatment from the comfort of your own home through video conference technology.
Wondering how virtual physiotherapy works? In this Spotlight, we’ll share some first hand information from one of our physiotherapists with you.
Jessica Ly, Clinic Team Manager and Physiotherapist at Harvester Road Physiotherapy – pt Health has been offering virtual physiotherapy here for the past few weeks.
Today, we’re talking to Jessica about her experience with this service so far.
Q: Tell us about the type of treatments you can provide through virtual physiotherapy.
A: With virtual care, I can continue to provide a combination of advice, education and guidance to help manage your pain, build strength and endurance, correct improper biomechanics that may be contributing to the issues at hand as well as construct individualized exercise programs to help reach your rehab goals.
Q: What has the patient experience been like with virtual care?
A: The feedback that I’ve received from my patients who have participated in virtual care so far have been really positive.
Patients value the knowledge they gain and appreciate how they can come out of each session with something they are able to do immediately at home to help manage their symptoms.
Q: Can you share your favourite story of how you helped a patient with virtual care?
A: I’ve been fortunate to experience a lot of great moments since treating virtually over the past several weeks.
One of those moments include being able to successfully help a patient, who had an acute flare up of low back pain to walk symptom-free again. She normally takes her dog to the dog park once a day, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the public parks have closed and her dog’s only source of exercise is through going for 30min walks twice a day.
My patient was initially worried that she would not be able to resume her walks without coming into the clinic for manual therapy, but was relieved when we were able to work together to build an exercise routine including a series of stretches and movement patterns that allowed her to regain the ability to stand up tall and walk without pain.
This solidified my belief that there is so much we can do to help our patients, despite not being able to provide those hands-on skills that have always been an important part of my practice.
I’ve also really enjoyed how virtual care has provided me an opportunity to be creative and problem solve new ways to perform my role as a physiotherapist.
This has definitely motivated me to think outside the box and I’m excited to see how I can continue to grow through these experiences.
